Message of Deputy Prime Minister SOK AN

Appeal to States-Parties to the Convention concerning the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage

On 7th September 2009, at the National Museum of Phnom Penh, on the occasion of the official launching ceremony of the candidate of the Kingdom of Cambodia to the world of the Office of the Council of Ministers, Chairman of the Cambodian National Commission for UNESCO, declared:

"Through the International and National Action for safeguard of Angkor, World Heritage Site, this campaign started 1993 under the active auspices of UNESCO, France and Japan, Cambodia has tradition in protecting and conserving its cultural as well as natural heritage. In particular, the preservation of the properties is firmly grounded in respect for cultural diversity and the participation of local communities.

Therefore, we support strongly the principles of the Convention and the efficiency of its instruments, with the close cooperation among States-Parties. We consider that the historical, archaeological and artistic Khmer heritage is the major assets of the Kingdom of Cambodia.

In order to preserve this heritage and to keep it alive, the Royal Government, under the leadership of His Excellency the Prime Minister, Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo HUN Sen, set up a legal and technical network, as well as regulations and innovative approaches for the field programmes.

Within the Committee, the Kingdom of Cambodia will support the Global Strategy for a balanced, representative and credible World Heritage List. The Kingdom will continue to strengthen the effective balance between conservation and development, with the respect of environmental responsibility, fundamental goals and conservation and values of heritage."
